AFTER SIXTY YEARS THE PROBLEM ARISES BACK
OF PEACE IN EUROPE AND IN THE WORLD
Once again the powerful and stubborn despots prove how little
it is worth to them
human life, as opposed to others (no less powerful) of the
essential value of the same.
It would be good for everyone to dust off a few pages of history focusing on the wise
concern that was proper to Albert Schweitzer
by Ernesto Bodini (journalist and biographer)
Humanity loses its fur but not its vice, it would be
appropriate to say, referring in particular to the increasingly consistent
presence of nuclear weapons by the major powers in the world. But above all, in
this particular moment, in which Russia and Ukraine are at the center of
political-war actions and decisions, keeping the world in suspense; in addition
to other countries (no less influential), directly or not involved ...
Recalling a historical background, it should be remembered that for 13 days,
from 16 to 28 October 1962, the world was on the brink of the nuclear abyss, as
the U-2 (US high-altitude reconnaissance aircraft equipped with video and
camera equipment, manufactured by Lockheed, ed.) Discovered that the Soviets
were setting up missile bases in Cuba and, in this regard, the US president,
John Fitzgerald Kennedy (1917- 1963), spoke to the nation of "threats to
peace", precisely because the world had never been so close to an atomic
conflict. Regarding the current situation, the US president, Joe Biden (1942),
on 7 October last mentioned the risk of a "nuclear Armageddon"
(catastrophic clash), evoking the Cuban missile crisis. And to worry President
Biden himself. this is what happens on the Ukrainian fronts, where the Moscow
Army has been retreating for weeks. The various mass media are updating us
about all this and more, but none of them thought to recall, as an
"example", that in the spring of 1962, when the "Caribbean
crisis" broke out, Albert Schweitzer (1875-1965), already awarded the
Nobel Peace Prize he sent a letter to the American President Kennedy, inviting
him to a wise and balanced decision, to avoid in that case the arms race, thus
avoiding the danger of unimaginable atomic conflict. Today, if we look closely
and reflect more, due to the insane mental evolution of a character and his
acolytes, we are perhaps not very far from the risk we took sixty years ago.
So, in my opinion, I believe that it is useful to all the "interested
recipients", to recall the correspondence (actualizing it) that Dr.
Schweitzer (in the photo) on 20 April 1962, from Africa, sent to the American
president, and which I faithfully reproduce here (from the source A.
Schweitzer, Leben, Werk und Denken cit., Pp. 310-311), and that in my modest
advice it would be useful to consider, at least morally ...
«Dear Mr. President
Kennedy, have the courtesy to forgive an elderly man, such as I am, who has
taken the liberty of writing to you about the nuclear tests which the United
States intends to carry out, in agreement with Great Britain, in in the event
that Russia does not accept the condition set by America to establish an
International Control Commission to supervise the suspension of any experiment.
I feel compelled to write to you about it, with the courage of those who have
been concerned about nuclear weapons and the problem of peace for a long time.
I believe I can assure you that, given the most recent scientific discoveries,
any nuclear experiment carried out by the Soviets would be detected by the
highly sophisticated instruments available to your country for its own defense.
From my position of absolute neutrality, I also allow myself to point out that
I am not entirely convinced that the claim of a State to impose on another, on
its territory, the presence of an international Commission of control is
legally founded. This right can only exist after the United States has entered
into a disarmament agreement. In that case, a new situation would arise that
puts an end to the Cold War by giving each state the right to know, through
mutual control measures guaranteed internationally, if the partner complies
with its disarmament obligations in accordance with the agreement. This same
international control would also verify that no other experiments are carried
out. The world badly needs the nuclear powers to conclude a disarmament
agreement under effective international control as soon as possible. The
possibility of negotiating such an agreement should not be called into question
by non-strictly binding requirements regarding international control aimed at verifying
the termination of the experiments. Only when the states agree on the need to
stop these experiments, then the negotiations on disarmament and peace can take
place with a good chance of success. But if this is not achieved now, the whole
world will find itself in a desperate and dangerous situation. Please consider
whether you want to take responsibility for setting conditions that are not
absolutely necessary for the cessation of atomic experiments, or whether this
terrible responsibility will not rather encourage you to make these experiments
a thing of the past and that positive negotiations of disarmament and peace may
finally take place».
President Kennedy, in response to the elderly
doctor-missionary, admitted that he had long, thanks also to his words,
reflected on the consequences of a drastic military resolution, expressing his
esteem for Schweitzer, calling him "one of the moral personalities of
major importance of our century ". And as is well known, Kennedy decided
not to attack the Russians, not wanting to demonstrate (according to some) his
superiority to the world, and so should Vladimir Putin by putting an end to
this absurd policy full of bitterness, omnipotence and despotism. This
gentleman, who is an exception to call him such, probably knows the etymology
of the word peace, but he does not take into account its concrete essence and
value ... perhaps because the value of this concept for him is not
international and much less global (sic! ), as well as by some loyal to
totalitarian regimes assuming a role that is not theirs ... Even if humanity
has always known and suffered the most absurd aberrations and wickedness on the
part of the same components, it is never too late to think that peace among
peoples is a duty to be honored precisely because there is a man willed by God,
and many philosophers and philanthropists have spent their time in his defense:
even some animals understand this value by showing us their unconditional
affection. But evidently, Putin and others don't even have this no less
sensitivity!
