Chi combatte oggi sul fronte russo-ucraino sono in gran parte figli di 

coloro che nella metà degli anni ’50 fruirono del vaccino antipolio Sabin...

È inutile. Il destino dell’umanità continua a comprendere ogni sorta di atrocità e nefandezze prodotte proprio dall’uomo, ma per fortuna o per la necessità del giusto equilibrio, anche di altrettanti contributi volti a migliorare le condizioni di vita di molti. Ho scritto di molti, e non di tutti, perché proprio a causa di quell’equilibro (all’inverso) una parte dell’umanità non ha mai goduto e potrà godere dei molti benefici prodotti da scienziati, filantropi e volontari. Quello che vorrei rilevare sono gli effetti negativi e quindi distruttivi ad opera di despoti, tiranni ed esaltati che attraverso lotte interne e più estesamente a conflitti bellici, per appagare il proprio Ego e la propria sete di potere decimando una notevole porzione dell’umanità, vanificano così il lavoro di chi ha creduto e crede nella serena evoluzione della specie. Dal punto di vista storico e scientifico, ad esempio, vorrei rammentare al despota russo, ai suoi accoliti e di riflesso alle sue truppe che, i genitori di queste ultime, molto probabilmente erano gli adolescenti che a metà degli anni ’50 sono stati preservati dal rischio di contrarre la poliomielite grazie al vaccino Sabin, proprio ad opera del suo omonimo prof. Albert (1906-1993). Infatti, tale vaccino nel 1959 fu testato su (77 milioni) di bambini in Russia, in cooperazione con il microbiologo Mihkail Chumakov (1909-1993). Ciò significa che i famigliari degli attuali combattenti hanno potuto godere di quel vaccino; quindi se non fossero stati vaccinati con molta probabilità parte di essi si sarebbero ammalati (e/o deceduti). e forse avremmo oggi meno soldati al fronte. Da questa oggettiva constatazione sarebbe interessante sapere che cosa ne pensano il despota Vladimir Putin (1952), il suo rivale Volodymyr Zelenscky (1978) e parte delle loro truppe; ma poiché non mi sarà dato a sapere, mi limito a ricordare quanto segue per la curiosità del lettore.

L’inevitabile “esodo” del vaccino Sabin

Per una serie di ragioni a metà anni ’50 il vaccino di Sabin prima che negli USA trionfò nei Paesi dell’Est (oltre la “cortina di ferro” allora esistente tra Oriente e Occidente), dell’Asia e dell’Europa: dal 1959 al 1961 furono vaccinati con il vaccino Sabin milioni di bambini (77 milioni solo in URSS). Quelle prime vaccinazioni dettero risultati lusinghieri (a parte il riflesso medico e umanitario di questi risultati, quei Paesi furono avvantaggiati anche dal punto di vista economico, perché del vaccino Sabin occorrevano quantitativi di molto inferiori al vaccino Salk), e ciò contribuì ad alimentare negli Stati Uniti la polemica già in corso tra quanti consigliavano di passare al vaccino Sabin e chi sosteneva, invece, il vaccino Salk, anche se non era riuscito ad eradicare la malattia. Poiché in questi Paesi non si verificò più alcun caso di poliomielite, furono prodotti e immessi sul mercato notevoli quantitativi del vaccino Sabin orale monovalente contro il poliovirus tipo I, e poco dopo anche il vaccino orale tipo II (OPV) e il vaccino orale trivalente tipo III (TOPV) valido contro tutti e tre i tipi di poliovirus. Più estensivamente la Germania Est, la Russia, la Polonia e la Cecoslovacchia furono i primi Paesi al mondo a non avere più “nessun caso” nelle statistiche, grazie all’antipolio Sabin. Nel giugno 1959 si tenne a Washington un congresso internazionale, sotto gli auspici dell’Ufficio Sanitario Panamericano e della Fondazione Sister Keney, con la partecipazione di 70 virologi di 17 Paesi.

Furono tutti d’accordo nel dichiarare che i “virus vivi” della polio non soltanto sono innocui, ma atti a dare l’immunità. Il mese dopo (luglio) la rivista medica “The New England Journal of Medicine” scriveva: «I più autorevoli virologi ed epidemiologi concordano che soltanto la somministrazione, attraverso il tubo digerente, di un virus vivo, opportunamente attenuato, può dare ragionevole certezza di una sicura e durevole immunità contro la poliomielite…». Nonostante le positive conferme della scienza medica ufficiale le autorità statunitensi indagarono oltre… Nell’agosto del 1959 l’Oms inviò in URSS la virologa Dorothy Hortsmann (1911-2001) della Yale Poliomyelitis Study Unit per valutare obiettivamente l’efficacia del vaccino Sabin nella prevenzione della poliomielite. Si rese subito conto della situazione accertandosi della assoluta validità del vaccino, e dopo soli tre mesi tornò negli Stati Uniti per confermare che il vaccino era “sicuro ed efficace”. Questa rievocazione storico-scientifica a conferma che coloro che hanno innescato i conflitti in quei territori, oltre alla smania dello stra-potere e reciproche rivalità, hanno disprezzato (e lo affermo senza virgolette) i sacrifici e la generosità di Albert Sabin e del suo collaboratore Mihkail Chumakov (nella foto). Una doppia irresponsabilità che ha procurato e continua a procurare vittime e invalidi, proprio perché per comandare bisogna riuscire a trovare chi è disposto a ubbidire, e purtroppo sono molti i comandanti ed ancor più gli asserviti.

It's pointless. The destiny of humanity continues to encompass all manner of atrocities and iniquities caused by man himself, but fortunately or by necessity, it also encompasses contributions aimed at improving the living conditions of many. I have written about many, not all, because precisely because of that (reverse) balance, a portion of humanity has never enjoyed, and will never enjoy, the many benefits produced by scientists, philanthropists, and volunteers. What I would like to highlight are the negative and therefore destructive effects of despots, tyrants and fanatics who, through internal struggles and more extensively through war conflicts, to satisfy their ego and their thirst for power by decimating a significant portion of humanity, thus nullifying the work of those who believed and believe in the serene evolution of the species. From a historical and scientific point of view, for example, I would like to remind the Russian despot, his acolytes and by extension his troops that the parents of the latter were most likely the adolescents who in the mid-1950s were preserved from the risk of contracting polio thanks to the Sabin vaccine, created by its namesake Professor Albert (1906-1993). In fact, this vaccine was tested in 1959 on 77 million children in Russia, in cooperation with the microbiologist Mikhail Chumakov (1909-1993). This means that the families of current combatants were able to benefit from that vaccine; So if they hadn't been vaccinated, some of them would most likely have gotten sick (and/or died), and perhaps we would have fewer soldiers at the front today. Given this objective observation, it would be interesting to know what despot Vladimir Putin (1952), his rival Volodymyr Zelensky (1978), and some of their troops think about it; but since I won't be able to know, I'll limit myself to recalling the following for the reader's curiosity.

The inevitable "exodus" of the Sabin vaccine

For a number of reasons, in the mid-1950s, the Sabin vaccine triumphed in Eastern Europe (beyond the "Iron Curtain" then existing between East and West), Asia, and Europe before reaching the US. From 1959 to 1961, millions of children were vaccinated with the Sabin vaccine (77 million in the USSR alone). Those first vaccinations yielded encouraging results (aside from the medical and humanitarian implications of these results, those countries also benefited economically, as much smaller quantities of the Sabin vaccine were needed than the Salk vaccine). This contributed to fueling the ongoing controversy in the United States between those who recommended switching to the Sabin vaccine and those who supported the Salk vaccine, even though it had failed to eradicate the disease. Since no further cases of polio occurred in these countries, significant quantities of the Sabin monovalent oral vaccine against type I poliovirus were produced and released onto the market, followed shortly thereafter by the type II oral vaccine (OPV) and the type III trivalent oral vaccine (TOPV), effective against all three types of poliovirus. More specifically, East Germany, Russia, Poland, and Czechoslovakia were the first countries in the world to have zero cases, thanks to the Sabin polio vaccine. In June 1959, an international conference was held in Washington, D.C., under the auspices of the Pan-American Health Office and the Sister Keney Foundation, with 70 virologists from 17 countries participating. They all agreed that "live polio viruses" were not only harmless, but capable of providing immunity. The following month (July), the medical journal "The New England Journal of Medicine" wrote: "The most authoritative virologists and epidemiologists agree that only the administration, through the digestive tract, of a live, suitably attenuated virus can provide reasonable assurance of safe and lasting immunity against polio..." Despite the positive confirmations of official medical science, the US authorities investigated further… In August 1959, the WHO sent virologist Dorothy Hortsmann (1911-2001) of the Yale Poliomyelitis Study Unit to the USSR to objectively evaluate the effectiveness of the Sabin vaccine in preventing polio. She immediately understood the situation, ascertaining the absolute validity of the vaccine, and after only three months she returned to the United States to confirm that the vaccine was “safe and effective”. This historical-scientific reenactment confirms that those who triggered the conflicts in those territories, in addition to the mania for excessive power and mutual rivalry, despised.
